Dal Palak

A tasty and nutritious Indian dish called Dal Palak is created with spinach (palak) and lentils (dal). This comforting dish is a great way to get your iron and protein while still enjoying a tasty and nutritious meal. It includes the benefits of both spinach and lentils.

Ingredients

For cooking lentils

1/4 cup tuvar dal

1/4 cup masoor dal

1.5 cup water

1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder

More Ingredients

2 tablespoons Ghee

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 teaspoon green chilies

1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)

1/4 teaspoon kashmiri red chili powder

Salt as required

2 cups spinach

Instructions

  1. Rinse 1/4 cup tuvar dal and 1/4 cup masoor dal for 2-3 times in water.
  2. Add rinsed dal to a pressure cooker and add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder and 1.5 cups water.
  3. Pressure cook the dal for 7 to 8 whistles on medium heat or until the dal become soft and mushy.
  4. Meanwhile prepare the spinach. Rinse spinach in water for a few times. Drain all the water and set it aside.
  5. Chop the rinsed palak finely. Set the chopped palak aside.
  6. Heat 2 tablespoons ghee in a kadai. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds on low heat and let them splutter.
  7. Add 1 teaspoon chopped green chilies and fry for some seconds.
  8. Add the 2 cups of finely chopped palak and mix it.
  9. Sauté palak for 4-5 minutes on low heat till the palak soften. Stir often.
  10. Add 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder and 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing). Mix and sauté for a minute.
  11. Add the boiled and mashed dal. Season with salt as per taste.
  12. Add 1/2 to 1 cup water to the dal. Mix thoroughly.
  13. Cook the dal for 5 to 6 minutes. Stir often.
  14. Turn off the heat and serve dal palak with roti or rice.
